Tom Waits Interview.

sherry:

Q: What’s heaven for you?

A: Me and my wife on Rte. 66 with a pot of coffee, a cheap guitar, pawnshop tape recorder in a Motel 6, and a car that runs good parked right by the door.

I once bought Tom Waits a bottle of $200 tequila (as assistant to his agent I was tasked w/ picking his Christmas present) and I distinctly remember him thanking me, in a fake cry, “man that’s the best present I got this year, that tequila was like heaven”.

Tumblr just broke into the Top 100!
Please welcome our new Director of Scaling and Sysops.
Watching the community grow so quickly over the past few months has been humbling and inspiring.  It’s also presented huge new scaling challenges that have quickly become a full-time job.
So we’re psyched to be welcoming Andrew Terng to the team to make sure Tumblr is fast and stable while we get everyone in the world blogging.  Andrew just moved back to NYC from California where he had been scaling Delicious at Yahoo for the past two years.  Welcome, Andrew!
This is an amazing opportunity you guys have given us and we’re working hard to make sure your experience here only gets better.  :)

98 out of 186,727,854 (as of Dec 2009, according to Pingdom)! Wow.
Welcome, Andrew.

Blip.tv is looking for an ad operations rock star. Our sales team has been crushing it and we need an operations star to also crush it.

The position is Director of Advertising Operations.

Hot job opening at Blip in Soho. Mention Tumblr for bonus points.

“By the way, I have seen numerous videos of interviews with you online and you do, in fact, speak incredibly fast..making it basically impossible for me to reproduce everything you say in simultaneous translation. I have one last request, speak more slowly.”

- email from Evento Blog conference translator where David will give the keynote on Saturday.

Loyalty you don’t talk about

Sometimes not telling your customers how important they are is the best way to keep them spending.

My friend Rob Deeming from Gilt Groupe on retaining your most important customers.  Smart guy, I recommend a follow here.

I’m a bona fide Yankee fan - but in terms of throwing ticker tape parades thru the Canyon of Heroes for sports teams that win trophies after spending 208m - with U.S. unemployment at 10%?

I’d think best we save such celebrations for things like landing on the moon.

Really? Give me a break. People need sports and distractions and levity and wins even more in times of recession and unemployment. It doesn’t matter if the win is landing on the moon or winning the World Series. It’s all about celebration in bleak times.

And those $208mm were injected into the economy just like the billions spent on the Apollo Program.

I get the part about the uplifting celebration in bleak times - my point was does lower Manhattan need a massive ticker tape parade around what is really a commercial enterprise. Can’t compare the wins? Please. Take the parade to Yankee Stadium, save the big ‘Canyon of Heroes’ show for epic national events (wars won) and true heroes (U.S. astronauts first on the moon).

In the meantime I love this shot of Jeter and Matsui.
